Description

Originally founded in 1870, Irvington was an early suburb of Indianapolis and always served as a core of culture, industry, and arts on the city’s east side. Platted along Washington Street (then known as the National Road), the neighborhood has retained its historic homes, churches, and landmarks throughout the years, and still builds on its artistic history from the Irvington Group movement in the early 1900s by teaching and displaying art throughout the community. It also was home to the original Butler University campus, which spawned a wealth of libraries and educational institutions within Irvington. The neighborhood is also host to a week-long Halloween festival that started in 1947 and still continues to this day.
